To begin, students in this hands-on session will be shown various methods of attaching a box blank securely to the lathe. The blank will be turned to a cylinder, and a tenon will be formed on each end.
At various times during this session, students will chuck up their project and reverse it for various operations until the box is completed.
The base section will be parted off with the lid remaining fixed into the chuck jaws. The underside of the lid will be hollowed and finished. Following a similar process, the base will be mounted into the chuck jaws, and the base section will be hollowed out. Students will jam-fit the lid onto the base in order to complete the top of the lid. After sanding and applying to finish, the project will be completed.
